She knows all of my dirty little secrets and she loves me anyway.

We met Marcy, Bob, and their four kids in DC and stayed for the weekend. Then they followed us home. I think we were all a little concerned about 10 people in a 3 bedroom house, but it couldn't have gone smoother.

We laughed a lot, too much to write about.  Here are just a few of the highlights;
Bob and the hot sauce incident.
1st roller coaster ride.
Using 2 bottles of ketchup at one meal.
Digging for fossils in our back yard.
VIMS touch tank.
Creating wii characters of our guests.
Seeing the White House.
Riding the Metro during the Cherry Blossom Festival.
The look on Bob's face after going for a motorcycle ride.
The look on Krystal face when I came out the dressing room. Her expression was priceless. I didn't have to ask her how I looked. It was a definite NO.

I could go on and on.

We miss you already. My FC (Favorite Cousin), and his battalion have been training at Fort AP Hill, which is only about an hour from my home. FYI, Fort AP Hill is a war training facility.

I haven't seen FC since GG pasted about three years ago. We spent the first part of the visit catching up. Then I got the grand tour. There wasn't much to see. I counted six or so white cinder block buildings. The buildings were just as plain on the inside as they were on the outside. I am considering turning them into HGTV for a makeover. Next we took a drive around the base. We made a quick stop at the artillery range. I attached a video. I hope it works.

The experience was really cool and I felt privileged to go see FC and meet some of the men that work so hard and have given up so much for our country. I don't think I could do what they do.

On a lighter note. The strangest thing about my visit was seeing FC in action. As kids we ran around the farm and acted stupid together. Since I don't know who will be reading this I wont be giving any details. I don't want to undermine his authority. You just have to trust me that we were good at being stupid and getting into trouble. Now he is in command 800 men! And I would like to add that he is good at it. I could tell that his men not only respected him but they liked him too. But whats not to like?

Thanks again for inviting me. Stay safe.

ps I could not get the video to work. Try back later.

Chance of Snow, Snow Day

I thought all you snowbound Yankees would get a kick out of this. I know I did. Last night there was a chance of 3 to 5" of snow. Before one snowflake fell the whole Eastern Seaboard went into lock down. The grocery stores were stripped bare. It was announced on the 11:00 news that schools, colleges, and some factories would be closed in the morning. V-Dot was out all night putting brine on the roads. The best part is we did not get any snow. In fact I don't recall seeing a snow cloud.

Drill Baby Drill

Tuesday our well went dry.
Wednesday we called a plumber hoping it was the pump. Either did I.
Saturday the big drill rig sunk in the mud and had to be towed out.
Sunday is Holy Day.
Monday we had a logging road put down so the trucks could get to the back yard.
Monday night about 8:00 we had water!

We were able to take showers at the fitness center and our neighbor, Jerry, let us fill containers so we could flush. It was interesting to say the least. All in all it wasn't so bad. Two of our favorite things, dogs and art. Our local library sponsored a free art class "All Gestured Up with a Dog." The artist, Kendra Wadsworth, was awesome. But as you can see her assistant Cassie Mae stole the show.

I sat in on the class because the girls were feeling shy that morning. I'm glad I did because I enjoyed watching the children create. They didn't stress out about what others think, staying in the lines, or what colors to use. They we just happy to be there.

The class was made up of about 10 high school, middle school, and elementary school age kids. Kendra did and excellent job of teaching to every age group. The teens in the class were very polite and a great role model for the younger kids.

We'd love to see Kendra and Cassie Mae come back for more classes.

Going For Gold

My friend Katie and I won best couple at a Halloween party last weekend. Some of you may not know this but she is a huge Billy Idol fan. So, what could be better than getting tickets to a Billy Idol concert for your birthday? How about going to see him on your birthday!

Billy came to Virginia Beach, and preformed right on the beach. The sponsors,Beach Street USA, set up a full size stage right on the beach. We were able to get about 30 feet from the stage. We all had a blast.

I don't know how we'll ever top this birthday.

ps we met a photographer at the concert and she forwarded us some pics from the big night.
file:///Users/Tony/Desktop/flickr.com:photos:ragefoto.webloc

Back on line

I have been having technical difficulties.
Please stand by for new posts.

As the Nest Turns

After watching the eagles for a year my Mom and I finally made the trip over to the Norfolk Botanical Gardens. It was a little chilly and over cast, but not too bad. We could see the nest immediately, and the female resting on a branch. We watched from the ground for a few minutes, then went up into the observation tower. It was so cool to be there in person instead of looking at a small video screen on my computer.

Channel 13 did an update story, here's the link. It's a must see. It was awesome! This year the Eagle Cam has recorded the eagles build a new nest and lay three new eggs. I just read that our eagles were attacked by a third eagle. They were forced to leave the nest for long periods of time. It is not know if the eggs are still viable.

You can read more and see a slide show of the attack at www.wvec.com.

That's our girl!

She did it again! The 5th graders were all asked to design an anti smoking t-shirt. You are looking at the winner!!!! It says "Don't Smoke. When you do you kill."

It's hard to see the details. If you look closely you will see that these aren't just any old ground squirrels, they are thirteen line ground squirrels. You will also see that the words "don't smoke" have fire on them. She is covering her eyes because the entrance to her home is filled with cigarette butts and the ground is also littered with cigarettes.

Click photo enlarge.

Her message is clear. We bought a season pass so any and everyone who comes to visit this year can count on dropping in. There is an ice skating ring, an Imax theater, and lots of flight simulators, just to name a few things. I also found out that I only weight 7 lbs. on Pluto. Maybe I'll try to get weight wathchers to have a meeting there.

We had a total blast, and have even been back for a second visit. We are planning our next visit soon because Jelly Belly is sponsoring a traveling exhibit called "Candy Unwrapped."

<img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; We all love to ride the coasters, especially Anna. There are three big coasters that she has not been able to ride, Apollo's Chariot, Alpengueist(Alpine Ghost, help me out FG), and Griffon. It's been hard for her to watch everyone having fun while she waits. That was until now. I wont go into the details of how it came to be but Anna got to ride Apollo's and Alpine Ghost. As you can see by her giant smiles she loved every second of it.
<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; She was chosen to be student of the week. These are all of the cool things she got to do:

Monday she filled out a questionnaire about herself and made a poster with this picture. Tuesday she shared her poster with the class and had to answer any questions they had. Wednesday she brought in three pictures of her choice and had to tell why they are so important to her.
Thursday she got to pick three friends from any third grade class and have lunch with them in the classroom.
Friday she gets to bring a favorite thing to share.

The three pics she chose were Kipper's first bath, family at Lake MI, VA Beach with friends, and I put a fourth pic of Anna in the snow. I am finally taking the leap and reentering society. I will be the first one to admit that I have been keeping to myself since we have moved. I guess it was my own way of self protecting. Denial would be another way to describe it.

My first step was joining the PTA. My second step was looking for work. There are so many people hiring here it was easy to find something that was flexible enough for me. Lastly, I accepted a part time job at the Wellness and Fitness Center.

I start on Tuesday. I will be giving tours and keeping the guests happy. I think I'll be good at that. It's part time and the pay sucks but I get a free membership and T and the girls are almost free. If you figure in the cost of a full family membership it's a great paying job. The best part is they have an full size pool.

Wish me luck.

Happy Birthday Tony and Chuck

He didn't think I could do it but I did. Two of the most controversial topics in America are gun control and smoking. Now you can get them both at the same store. One stop shopping at its best. I haven't been in this store, but from what I have been able to gather guns and cigs are pretty much the only inventory they stock. I'm not even sure if they sell lottery tickets.

This store was part of the inspiration for the title of our blog, along with a few other strange things we've seen down here. The actual title came from a visit to the Jamestown Settlement. The museum had a newspaper that was titled Strange News From Virginia. The paper was published to get people interested in the new world. It seemed a perfect fit.

With signs like these...

I always thought I had a good sense of direction. As a kid my Mom taught me to read maps, and calculate mileage on all of our long trips to Ohio and Arizona. That all changed when we moved to Virginia. Even after a year I still can't seem to get my inner compass in gear. North isn't north it's more west and south isn't south it's more like east. It's like I've got some strange new form of directional dyslexia. And with signs like this it's no wonder. All you need is a chicken leg and a long piece of string. Tie the string to the leg, toss it into the river and wait. When you feel a tug slowly, and I mean slowly, pull it in. You can feel the crab pulling on the line, so if it lets go you wait until it grabs on again and start pulling. There is a small learning curve but it was fun. I actually caught two crabs at one time. Gracie got two also and Anna wasn't interested. It was too hot and buggy for her.

Last week my friends Diane, Emily, and Brendan came to visit and we tried a more advanced technique. I bought a crab net at Wal Mart for $3 and a package of chicken legs. This time we went to the fishing pier at the YR. All you need to do is tie the chicken to the inside of the net, lower it into the water and wait. We would play in the water for about 20 min, then run over to the pier and pull up the line. We caught about 5 or 6 total. My favorite part was letting them go and watching them scurry back into the water. We keep hearing how delicious they are but I can't bring myself to cook or eat them.

Fun and Educational

The VIMS/W&M (Virginia Institute of Marine Science, College of William and Mary), has great programs for kids. This one was about the blue crab. The scientific name is callinectes sapidus, which translates to beautiful swimmer. There were art projects, babies to handle, we learned about tagging and conserving, life cycles, mating, and more. We even got to dissect one. One cool thing I learned is that the females have red claws like nail polish. We went picking on Friday and since then we have been making all kinds of yummy treats. First we made turn-overs with a cream cheese filling. Next Gracie made us BB pancakes for lunch. Tony didn't want pancakes he wanted french toast so Mom found a recipe for BB sauce. It was so awesome! And easy.

Blueberry Sauce
1/2 cup sugar
1 Tbsp. cornstarch
1/8 tsp. salt
1/4 cup water
1 cup blueberries
1 tsp. lemon juice
1/4 tsp. finely grated lemon peal

Combine sugar, salt, and cornstarch in a 1-quart microwaveable dish. Stir in water. Add blueberries. Cover with vented plastic wrap. Microwave on HIGH for 3 1/2 to 5 minutes or until mixture has boiled for at least 1 minute. Stir in lemon juice and peel. Armed with this information we grabbed a bucket and a few shovels and headed down to the mostly dry river bed in our backyard.

We found all kinds of cool shells, corals, and barnacles. Our friend Lexus found two shells more that 6 inches wide. Imagine our excitement when I found what looked like a petrified fish. (see photo)

After washing everything we discovered that the fish was actually a piece of wood that had eroded in a way that looked like fins and scales.

Dad doesn't think it looks like a fish but the girls and I do. Oh yeah, Eric, stopped by for a short visit on their way home from SC. Any time Eric's name was mentioned the girls would say in unison, "Who's Eric?". I don't know what their deal was they know Eric, we've been to their home, cottage without walls (the dock), and out to eat with the family countless times. But he now holds a special place in their heart and mine, while at VB he treated everyone to the DQ. Yummy! I was too busy enjoying my ice cream to document with photos.

We only had one full day to hang out so we spent it at the aquarium and beach, two of our favorite places. I think Eric and Faye enjoyed the touch tank the most. It was cute watching them together.

The water was awesome, 72 degrees and waves 3 to 5 feet with an occasional 7 footer! We can't wait till they can come back and stay a little longer.

In case you were wondering what Eric looks like, every pic I have of him he was looking down or was too far away to make out his face. Sometimes I wonder if Tony and Eric are brothers.

There is one born every minute...

That would be fools and unwanted puppies. Against my better judgement we got a 9 week old puppy. Meet Kipper the most recent addition to our family. We named him after an English hound dog from the book and cartoon series Kipper The Dog by Mick Inkpen. His mother is a Belgian Sheppard and his father is unknown, maybe a lab. We are guessing he will be about 40 lbs when full grown. He is sweet but does not sleep Thur the night yet. We have all had a hard time adjusting to the VA school system. We came from a school that taught kids to think and problem solve to a school that is run like a military academy, sit down shut up and memorize 400 years of VA history.

It was tough going there for a while, home schooling was a hot topic, but we found our way. The girls made lots of new friends and I got to know the staff pretty well. It cost $10.00 for a spot and the chalk was provided. The girls decided to share an area. Tony and I were happy about that because it was 90 degrees with no shade in sight. The theme was Pocahontas. The girls chose to draw Pocahontas swimming with two turtles, some fish, and a hot pink crab. The animal on the grass is a beaver. G & A had so much fun they don't even care if they win a prize. To celebrate this great tradition Tony took the day off and we headed for Busch Gardens (without the girls) to ride the new roller coaster. It was awesome! If you'd like to get a better look go to www.buschgardens.com and there is a video you can watch.

I'm not sure if we were having old paranoia about skipping school or what but when we got to BG a helicopter was flying circles over the parking lot.

We really didn't think too much about it on the way in but when we left BG there it was circling our car in the parking lot. The only tanner in town is at the Gloucester Barber Shoppe. I would have never put the two together but...

After paying for my visit the woman takes me out the back door into an alley. I'm getting a strange feeling.

Then she directs me up these rickety old steps. She tells me "don't worry, they feel a little wiggley but there are support boards underneath." Up the wiggley stairs I go.

When I enter the room it looks like I'm in someones house. There's a table and chairs, a desk, a tv, and giant ashtray. What am I doing? I start looking for hidden video cameras. Then I get a look at the bed. OMG!!!! This thing is as old as I am. It has a dial for a timer and no glass protector for the top bulbs, only some type of chicken wire.

The whole thing turned out to be a wash because the bulbs are as old as the bed. I think I walked out paler than when I went in. Next time I'm going to the beach.

Welcome Home!

After spending a few relaxing days in Philly we
came home to this. A small tornado had hit our neighborhood. We were not totally taken by surprise. The school secretary called and told us the bus driver noticed we had some roof damage. A friend from work drove out to check out the damage. When she got close to our house she said there were police everywhere. As she turned onto our street she saw two news vans parked in front of our house and a helicopter flying in circles above it!
Our house was on the news but since we were out of town we didn't get to see it. You can check it out at www.wvec.com.

The pictures speak for themselves. We lost about 15 trees by the house and who knows how many out back. The good news is no one was hurt, Bruno was at the kennel and the hamsters didn't seem any worse for ware.

So, here's the big question. If a tornado hits your house on your 40th birthday does that mean the worst is over?
Here is the news link: http://www.wvec.com/news/topstories/stories/wvec_local_042707_gloucester_wind_damage.13ecf8ae.html

<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt;
